Coaches Corner Vol. 1

Hello Everyone!

I want to congratulate you all on a wonderful meet today. I had many people come up to me to remark on how much our swimmers have improved already, even in such a short time. It was amazing to see your kids race each other with spirit and enthusiasm.

That being said, the unfortunate news is we did not win the meet; however, keep in mind that while this is a sour note to end on, winning is not our end goal as coaches. We are here to teach your kids how to swim, and to hopefully teach them to enjoy racing and competing with each other. We are confident we are moving towards that goal!

After some discussion, here are some major points the Coaches will be working on with the younger age groups in the coming week:

Freestyle

  • Keeping big arms and small kicks consistent throughout entire races
  • Relying less on lane ropes, pushing off the bottom for assistance
  • Getting faces in the water
  • Learning to breathe to the side
  • Streamlines! Streamlines! Streamlines!
  • Learning and perfecting turns
  • Building endurance

Backstroke

  • Stroke counts and backstroke finishes!
  • Learning and perfecting backstroke turns
  • Getting arms out of the water

Breastroke

  • Continuing to learn and perfect breaststroke kick
  • Working on not pulling past the hip line
  • 2 hand touches!
  • Gliding! Gliding! Gliding!

Turns and Dives

  • As mentioned above, learning and perfecting freestyle and backstroke turns
  • Reminders about what to do when you hear the false start buzzer
  • Building relay confidence, and working on relay starts

We will have an introductory day for Butterfly for 9 and ups sometime this week as well. Older swimmers will continue to work on perfecting their technique and working on race strategies, sprinting, and endurance.

Thank you all again for a wonderful meet, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. If you want additional instruction for your swimmer, private lessons are available from any of our wonderful coaches.

Thank you,

Coach Daniel
