HOW ARE RELAYS DETERMINED?

Our team is a recreational summer league swim team as opposed to a competitive club swim team.  That being said, we aim to win and qualify as many of our swimmers for the Finals Championship meet as possible.  Swimmer & relay finishes are part of what determines our league standing.

  • In general, relay teams are comprised of the fastest possible combination (based on official league seed times) of available swimmers expected to produce the fastest relay time with Coaches retaining discretion where other factors may apply.
  • If your swimmer wants to be considered for a relay, he or she needs to have a seed time in a 25 or 50 meter event of the stroke that they want to swim in a relay.  Seed times from other leagues or meets outside of RMSL will not be considered.
  • For the Freestyle Relay, Coaches will use the seed times for each swimmer in the 25 or 50 meter Freestyle.  The four fastest available swimmers become the A relay for the meet, the next four become the B relay and so on. The Coaches will create as many relays as possible to give the maximum number of swimmers the opportunity to participate. This is determined on a week to week basis and may change at Coaches discretion.
  • For the Medley Relay, Coaches will use the available seed times in each of the four strokes (Backstroke/Breaststroke/Fly/Freestyle) for each swimmer to create the fastest combination.  In order for a swimmer to participate in the Medley Relay, he or she needs to have legally completed the stroke in a previous meet. The Coaches will create as many relays as possible to give the maximum number of swimmers the opportunity to participate. This is determined on a week to week basis and may change at Coaches discretion.
  • For Dual Meets and Prelims, relays are determined after individual entries are completed and Coaches have confirmation of available swimmers. If your child is on a relay team, it is VERY important that they are available for Prelims & Finals.  If your swimmer is asked to participate in a relay for Prelims, he or she MUST be available for Finals should the team qualify.  In the rare instance that a swimmer is available for Prelims & not for Finals, Coaches reserve the right to make a decision that is in the best interest of the team.
  • Coaches have the ultimate say on who swims on which relay team, and they take multiple factors into consideration when determining relays.
